Charles J Wilder was named for his paternal uncle, and assumed āJā after reaching manhood. His early education took place at an Episcopal school in Buffalo, NY, as well as high school in the same town. He was a clerk for the Erie Railroad in Buffalo. Charles moved to Sacramento, CA when the Central Pacific Railroad opened in 1869 and clerked for it until he succeeded his brother, Al, as freight auditor. When general offices of the Central Pacific were moved to San Francisco, he accompanied them and served as General Freight Auditor and Asst. General Auditor for the Central Pacific and its successor, the Southern Pacific, for his entire active business life. I San Francisco he was a charter member of the Pacific Union and Olympic Clubs, as well as a member of the Pacific Club and the Academy of Sciences. As a boy in Buffalo, he was too young for the army but a member of the Home Guard and, as such, a member of the Guard of Honor over the remains Lincoln on the trip to Springfield.
