NOTEThelma E. Ward (Free Spirit) Thelma E. Ward 6/25/1909 – 6/23/2005 age 95 left us on Thursday June 23, 2005 of natural causes at South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach. Thelma was a long time resident of Laguna Beach, a city which she loved for its bohemian character and secluded beauty. Even in the 1950’s Thelma would commute to Laguna from Los Angeles to spend her weekends with friends in this quaint and beautiful seaside city. Thelma, the first in her family to complete college at UCLA, enjoyed a 35-year career as a physical education teacher in Los Angeles schools where she particularly enjoyed directing the synchronized swimming teams and loved modern dance. During World War ll Thelma joined The Red Cross and worked as social director in Panama. Thelma was well known for her love of life and zest for world travel visiting almost 100 countries, some on numerous occasions. Thelma also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and camping along the way in her VW bus. Thelma had a particular affinity with the American Indians of the South Western parts of The US. Much of Thelma’s jewelry was purchased from the Navajo and Zuni tribes and Thelma contributed to Indian schools on the reservations. A visit with Thelma was never dull or depressing but always positive and uplifting with a good story about traveling or just enjoying all the mementos decorating Thelma’s home including pottery, hand woven rugs, spears, arrow heads, dolls and necklaces from all over the world. Aimee Greenberg of Coastline News wrote a piece about Thelma in 2000 entitled A Local Living Treasure: Thelma Ward and stated “Spending time with Thelma Ward is like being in a constant state of epiphany”. If you ever felt down or things just did not seem to be going just right a visit with Thelma would always set things straight and leave one in good spirits. Thelma touched many people in her life with her positive attitude, free spirit and infectious smile. |
